When it comes to home insulation, a common question from homeowners, builders and private contractors is about spray foam insulation. We’re asked if spray foam is really required for a specific project. For the team at Great Northern Insulation, spray foam insulation is the best option for resolving these issues: high heating/cooling costs; poor overall HVAC performance; heating/cooling cycles that just aren’t balanced. Spray foam insulation simply does the job – its an ideal insulator, and performs as an excellent air barrier and vapor barrier at the same time.
Industry professionals seem to agree with GNI - they recognize the spray foam option as the best. Sometimes referenced as polyurethane foam, spray foam insulation is just an all-round better product, doing a better job of sealing, and bringing better R-values per inch wherever installed. There is no product on the market today that can deliver the same kind of results, which is why the installation professionals at GNI typically recommend the spray foam product to consumers and contractors alike.
If you’re thinking about installing spray foam insulation in Newmarket, or in one of the many suburban communities north of the GTA, consider hiring Great Northern Insulation. We have an installation approach that is based on two fundamentals - sealing tight and ventilating right. For us, spray foam insulation is part of that approach, but we also want to make sure that the “system” works properly. Inasmuch as airflow is restricted, we also want to ensure that air ventilation is optimized. Doing it any other way would be doing only half the job.
For the installation procedure itself, GNI is beyond compare in the industry. Our installers are well trained, and have years of spray foam expertise with the product and the installation. Our people always conform to the established building standards, they obey the local by-laws, and they install based on the manufacturer’s specifications. On every project, GNI provides the manufacturer’s warranty to the customer, and warranties everything that is sold and installed. We like to do it right the first time – on every project, and for every customer.
During a typical installation, the spray foam is sprayed out into an area using special equipment fitted with a hose mechanism. It’s an ideal application for large spaces like attics and roofs, and as the thick liquid foam spreads, it expands and hardens into a dense layer of insulation. The dense envelope of insulation has a higher R-value than any other product on the market, and when measured as a complete insulation system, it has a definite competitive edge over other products, or combination of products.
One of the best features of spray foam is that it completely encases a space. It seals everything, including every little nook and cranny. Better still, by sealing up those hard-to-reach areas, there is no need to install a vapor barrier - the foam insulation acts as a vapor barrier, and inhibits moisture. Spray foam is also impervious to water, and therefore resists mould and mildew. This is a high performance product - it improves on energy efficiency; it enhances the indoor air circulation; and it serves to balance the heating and cooling cycles.
GNI recommends spray foam insulation for projects large and small - renos, new construction, and retrofits are all viable. But we also recommend professional installation, an essential step if the product is to perform to its maximum potential. The installation team at Great Northern Insulation is made up of experts: trained, licensed and certified; working in a professional manner; and safeguarding the worksite for workers and residents alike. Most importantly, our focus is on resolving the challenges of the project.
When it’s installed properly, spray foam will cover everything entirely. It reaches every cavity, large and small, and all of those difficult areas that are hard to reach. An expert installation makes sure that no air can escape. And that’s why we don’t recommend turning this endeavor into a weekend DIY project. And expert install will deliver optimum results: the best R-values per inch; air and moisture control; and even sound dampening. It’s also true that a home with foam insulation can fetch a higher sale price.
Spray foam goes back over 50 years, when it was first used to insulate freezers and cooling equipment. More recently, it has become a very popular “go to” product for many professionals in the industry. Indeed, statistics show significant levels of growth for spray foam installations across Canada, with nearly 40% annual increases during the last decade. This trend accurately reflects the acceptance of foam insulation as a product of choice. And it’s for very good reason - heating and cooling costs from one season to the next can be reduced by 40% to 50%.
The cost of spray foam (product and installation) is relatively higher than some other products on the market. This is because it’s a premium product - it has excellent product features, and it delivers excellent dollar value. Spray foam lasts a lifetime, does not need replacement, and has a respectable “pay-back” period between 2 and 7 years. After application, utility savings are measurable, with heating/cooling cost savings that make the initial investment worthwhile. In terms of general costs, this is a good time to focus on long-term value.
As a professional contractor, GNI believes in installing spray foam insulation as part of the overall project. We usually recommend a ventilation system that ensures the appropriate circulation of fresh air throughout the indoor environment, while efficiently expelling the stale indoor air. When we’re done, we make sure that condensation is diminished, and that the movement of moisture is curtailed. We deliver a whole “system”, and one that’s efficient and effective. If you are planning to shop for spray foam insulation Newmarket, or in any of the suburban communities north of Toronto, GNI would be good to consider as a contractor. Everything that we sell and install is warrantied, and our ultimate focus is on satisfying our customer.
