At Great Northern Insulation, customers often ask if spray foam insulation is the right product for their job. This question comes to us from residential homeowners, new homebuilders, and private contractors, and we usually have the same answer for everyone, regardless of the job size. As far as GNI is concerned, spray foam insulation (when it is part of an overall “insulation system”) is the best approach to insulation. The benefits are simple and straightforward: reduction of heating/cooling costs; balanced heating/cooling cycles; enhanced HVAC operation.
Great Northern Insulation specializes in spray foam insulation in Aurora. We are leaders in the field, and have a proven and established approach to installation - sealing tight and ventilating right. We wouldn’t do it any other way, because we consider sealing and ventilating as doing a complete job. Throughout the industry, experts agree that when products are compared, spray foam insulation comes on top as a superior product. And for professionals in the industry, the spray foam product has become the “go to” solution every time.
Spray foam is also known as “polyurethane foam”, and is considered better than other products because it delivers a host of benefits in one application. Spray foam does a better job of sealing an area tight. It has a much better R-value rating than any of the other products. And as an added bonus, it adds structural strength throughout the area of the application. At Great Northern Insulation, our people routinely recommend spray foam insulation for all situations, including large spaces like the attic, inside walls, or under the floors.
Conventionally, the spray foam insulation product is sprayed out of a special nozzle system, and comes out in thick liquid form. During the application, the thick liquid expands and quickly hardens as it is spreading. The installer creates a uniform, dense layer of insulation that covers everything in sight, and becomes a surface that is impermeable to air and moisture. When installed properly and effectively, spray foam coverage is all encompassing - it fills every hole, crack and crevice, as well as all those “hard-to-reach” spots.
Professionals in the industry also like the spray foam product because it eliminates the need to install a separate vapor barrier. In fact, the final application serves as both an air barrier and moisture barrier at the same time. Beyond that, there are other benefits: energy efficiency in the residence or building is noticeably improved; the circulation of indoor air is measurably enhanced; and the performance of HVAC equipment is optimized. The thing is, with spray foam applied, and proper ventilation installed, a building can “breathe”.
Because Great Northern Insulation specializes in spray foam insulation, we employ installers who are experts in their field, and with years of experience with the spray foam product and with the installation process. Our installation teams follow recognized building standards, and obey construction codes and by-laws. They install according to the specifications provided by the manufacturer, and they don’t take shortcuts. At GNI, we stand behind the products we sell and the installations we perform. And our customers receive the manufacturer’s warrantee.
Our business philosophy at Great Northern Insulation is to do the job right the first time. It’s an approach we use on every job, regardless of size or scope. We get a good understanding of the challenges of the job, and we recommend products that suit the job. We know the spray foam industry well enough to know that this kind of work is more complex than just a DIY project. This is the kind of work that should be left to the experts, and we always discourage customers from taking this on as a do-it-yourself project.
When it was first developed in the 1960s, spray foam was used primarily in industry. It was a very effective insulator for freezers and coolers, and a proven insulator for cold storage spaces as well. The product was improved over the years, and has become the excellent insulation product that we use today. It is the ultimate product for large, expansive spaces like attics and roofs because it covers, seals and insulates all in one application. Even the smallest spaces are sealed, and when an application is complete, both air and moisture movement is curtailed.
At Great Northern Insulation, we tend to recommend spray foam insulation for all kinds of new construction, retrofitting, and renovation work. Along with the product, we also urge a professional installation – this is because only proper installation will ensure that the product performs to its full capacity. That’s why we use the best installers. They are expertly trained, licensed and certified. They know how to prepare a work area properly; they make use of the necessary protective and safety gear; and they make sure that residents/occupants are safe.
Spray foam insulation has gained wide popularity - usage has grown 40% per year in the last decade, showing that both product and application have been accepted. And it has everything to do with the product’s proven effectiveness and benefits - seasonal heating and cooling costs are significantly reduced; the increased R-value is dramatic; and both air and moisture levels are controlled. In fact, real estate professionals will confess that homes containing spray foam insulation could sell for higher resale prices than without.
Regarding costs, spray foam insulation is known to be more costly when compared to other products or product combinations. But the cost/benefit equation tells a different story. You usually get what you pay for, and this is especially true for spray foam insulation. It’s a premium product that has premium benefits. A spray foam application will last a lifetime, and will not need replacement. It delivers a “pay-back” period between 2 and 7 years, primarily because of the substantial energy savings. In short, the initial investment is well worthwhile.
If you are looking for spray foam insulation in Aurora, or in the surrounding communities, Great Northern Insulation would be worth considering as a contractor. We are committed to doing the job right - the first time.
