Choosing a suitable attic insulation product, or for that matter deciding on an insulation contractor, can be difficult and sometimes even frustrating. As homeowners, we all get bombarded by home improvement companies who want to sell us their services; plus, we watch those ad campaigns launched by the brand manufacturers; plus, when we’re searching the Internet, every insulation product looks like the best one, and every insulation contractor looks like the best choice. Instead of making it easier, all that information actually makes it more difficult, and making a final decision on product and company gets frustrating. Choosing a well-established insulation contractor, with a reputable history, and great references, can transform that experience. A good contractor will take you from the start of a project to the end, and will work with you to choose and install the very best insulation for your needs.
For a company like Great Northern Insulation, we want customers to be well informed – they make better purchasing decisions, and make decisions that are based on their requirements. We start things off with an attic inspection to determine the current condition, and to assess any next steps. We then evaluate product options with the customer, and decide which of the insulation products is best suited for the project. We also place an emphasis on the customer’s budget in order to match the product choice with the finances available. For attic insulation in Newmarket, Ontario, Great Northern Insulation offers a customer commitment that is truly unmatched in the industry. We are committed to installing only the best products - we are committed to the highest standards of installation - and we are committed to delivering 100% customer satisfaction.
Whatever product is chosen, it’s the expert installation and application of that product that’s most important. It means applying an appropriate amount of insulation where required, and it means filling every nook and cranny to ensure full and maximum coverage of the space. And while its true that an insulation project can be handled in a do-it-yourself manner, this is really a job that requires experience and expertise, and a job that is best left to the experts. At Great Northern Insulation, we don’t just insulate an attic - we see insulation as a complete system, so we install air barriers and vapor barriers to prevent air movement and moisture penetration. In the big picture, it allows for the optimum efficiency of the insulation, and results in a home that is well sealed, well ventilated, and well insulated.
When it comes to choosing specific attic insulation, its agreed throughout the industry that spray foam insulation is the best product money can buy. For the professional, the process is simple - the spray foam is prepared, and then sprayed out of a special hose device. Because we are dealing with chemical compounds, installing spray foam requires tools and equipment that are specialized, as well as protective wear and safety gear. Even in the best of scenarios, this is an application best left to an expert, with experience and expertise. When ready, the spray foam is applied as a thick liquid, and hardens quickly while it blankets everything in site. Coverage is total and complete: all the wooden joists and attic beams; all the plumbing pipes; and all the electric wires and ductwork. The hard foam coating creates a dense and tightly packed insulation. Air cannot move through the foam and moisture cannot penetrate - it’s the ultimate air barrier and moisture barrier combination.
Another attic insulation product, and one that is affordable for any budget, is “blown-in” insulation. Available in two versions, fiberglass or cellulose, it’s the “fluffy” nature of this insulation that prevents air from moving through it, thus making it an efficient insulator for the attic. “Blown-in” insulation (also known as loose fill insulation) is fabricated to be fire-resistant, mold resistant, and rodent resistant. Once again, with the use of special equipment, the insulation is blown into the attic, dispersed evenly throughout, and spread out so that the density is uniform. This product is just perfect for topping up existing insulation, and can be installed on top of the insulation, without disturbing what’s below. This method automatically increases R-values, and at reasonable cost. “Blown-in” insulation covers an area like the attic in a very effective manner, and creates a “thermal blanket” which contributes to the thermal protection of the space. Coverage is also excellent – everything in the attic is covered completely: the wooden beams; the cables and wiring; and all of the HVAC ductwork.
For the professionals at Great Northern Insulation, the ultimate approach to attic insulation is a “hybrid” technique, which results in a system that incorporates both types of insulation described above. It’s a combination approach where we use spray foam insulation and blown-in insulation for optimum results. Depending on the scope of the job, we would use the spray foam combined with the cellulose insulation, or the spray foam combined with the fiberglass insulation. The fact is, either of these two combinations is considered to be the best approach to insulation, period. Why? Because the spray foam provides the best air-sealing properties possible, and the combined spray foam insulation and blown-in insulation provides the best possible dollar value. For GNI, doing an insulation removal and replacement will usually entail one of these combination approaches. We’ll remove the existing insulation entirely, and then decide which product combination would best suit the scope of the job and the defined budget.
If you plan on upgrading your attic insulation in Newmarket, or in any of the communities north of the Greater Toronto Area, choosing Great Northern Insulation as your contractor would be a good move. Our people always do the job right the first time. We provide you with a product warranty on everything we sell and install; we guarantee our installations without question; and we take care of problems, issues and complaints without fail.
