1. Your Cottage Can Qualify for the Standalone Attic Rebate
Many homeowners assume rebate programs only apply to a primary residence, which can be the case for some rebates. However, that's not the case for the standalone attic rebate path of the Home Renovation Savings Program. Seasonal properties, including cottages, can qualify for an attic insulation rebate as long as they meet the program requirements.

2. There Are Two Rebate Paths, and One Is Simpler Than You’d Expect
The Home Renovation Savings Program is really two separate paths: the first is the new standalone attic path, perfect for homeowners who only want to improve their attic. There is no energy assessment required, a single attic upgrade qualifies, and Great Northern Insulation handles the rebate application on your behalf.
The multi-measure path is for larger projects. It offers higher total rebates (up to $5,000 for homes heated by natural gas, or up to $10,000 for homes heated by other sources) and covers areas like basement insulation, exterior walls, and even windows and HVAC upgrades. However, it requires pre- and post-work energy assessments from a registered energy advisor, which is at least partially reimbursed as part of the rebate, and a minimum of two qualifying upgrades.
The simple way to find out which of these two paths is right for you: if the attic is the only thing you're looking to upgrade, the standalone attic rebate is almost always the better fit. If you're planning larger renovations that include upgraded insulation in multiple areas of the home, such as the basement and exterior walls, the multi-measure path is designed for you.
3. The Program Is Currently Set To End November 30, 2026
As of this writing, the Home Renovation Savings Program in its entirety, including both rebate paths, is scheduled to end on November 30, 2026.
There's some important history to the program though - it was originally set to close on November 30, 2025, and was extended through 2026. It's possible that the program is extended again, and if that happens, we'll update this article, website, and social channels to let everyone know as soon as the change is confirmed.
Until any potential extension news happens, though, the safest approach is to treat November 30, 2026 as the deadline. Your rebate is determined by when the work is completed, not when you book a quote or express interest, and rebates are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. 4. The Standalone Attic Rebate Is Not Only For Cellulose
There's a common assumption that attic rebates only apply to blown-in cellulose. In reality, the standalone attic rebate can also be used for spray foam insulation, fiberglass batts, blown-in fiberglass, or for a combination of spray foam and cellulose in the same attic (which Great Northern Insulation calls a dual-type install).
Spray foam insulation is often a better option for tricky attic upgrades, such as sloped or cathedral ceilings, or where additional air sealing is a priority. Some attics benefit from a hybrid approach with a layer of spray foam to seal and insulate the difficult areas, followed by cellulose for cost-effective depth across the rest. 5. Rebate Details Can Change Quickly
Rebate programs aren't static. Amounts, qualification rules, and timelines can all shift with little warning.
Sometimes this means a beneficial change! In January 2026, the standalone attic rebate increased by $250 across all qualifying scopes, raising the maximum rebate for a standard attic upgrade from $1,000 to $1,250.
Other times, it means a negative change. A rebate program can be paused or closed entirely without much notice. Ontario homeowners saw this with the Canada Greener Homes Grant, a popular program that closed sooner than expected.
