The Great War Flying Museum, located at the Brampton Airport thirty minutes from Toronto, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to presenting aviation history through World War I era-appropriate aircraft and artifacts. Founded in 1970 by a group of Brampton Flying Club members, the hangar is today home to a fleet of replica aeroplanes lovingly constructed to inspire passion and appreciation for World War I aviation history.
As is to be expected with such specialized reconstruction work, proper conditions must be kept in order to assist in the preservation of the planes and components stored within the Great War Flying Museum hangar. When Great Northern Insulation was approached to quote insulation work for the hangar door, it was decided that the best approach would be to install spray polyurethane foam, followed by a thermal & ignition barrier designed to delay or prevent the spray foam insulation from being able to ignite in the case of a fire.
Since the hangar door needed to allow for the Great War Flying Museum’s aircraft to be transported in and out, spray polyurethane foam was the only insulation candidate that would provide full thermal insulation coverage and allow the door to remain operational. Great Northern Insulation utilized BASF’s Walltite Eco v3 closed-cell foam for this job, which provides not only fantastic thermal insulation but also an air, vapour, and weather-resistant barrier.
After the installation of the spray polyurethane foam, an intumescent thermal & ignition barrier paint was installed. Intumescent paint is a type of coating that will swell when heated, protecting the foam underneath from the fire and sealing any gaps to potentially prevent the spread of fire. In the case of a museum hangar home to a carefully reconstructed fleet of aircraft, this step goes beyond the normal requirement and becomes an important preventative feature. Great Northern Insulation utilizes Elastochem’s DC315 thermal & ignition barrier for most jobs, as it provides consistent coverage and is an extremely reliable and highly regarded industry standard.
Great Northern Insulation is very familiar with specialty jobs that differ from the typical residential or commercial insulation needs. With our talented crew of trained, professional installers, there hasn’t yet been a job that GNI has been unable to find a solution for. If you have a specialty job or issue with seemingly no solution, please do reach out to us via our Contact Us form we’ll be happy to work together towards a solution!
