E-5320 Two-Component Epoxy Primer |
E-5320 December 2001 Supersedes 7/00 |
| ||
DESCRIPTION: |
E-5320 is a two
component water based epoxy primer.
USAGE: |
A general purpose
primer which may also be used as a masonry block filler. It adheres well
to most metals, organic polymers, wood, masonry and vitreous surfaces. Do
not use on copper or silver.
Usage in the food processing industry is approved. All ingredients are sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration for use in coatings that contact food at temperatures up to 120°F (49°C). The U.S. Department of Agriculture has granted approval for use in meat and poultry processing buildings.
COLOR: |
Part A is White. Part
B is Brown. The combined product is Light Tan.
CONSISTENCY: |
Part A is slurry, with
soft settling characteristics. Part B is a viscous liquid. When combined,
the resulting product becomes a thixotropic, easy spreading
suspension. | |
| ||
WEATHERABILITY: |
Chalk resistance is
poor. Durability without top coating is only
fair. | |
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE: |
Good solvent, fair
acid, excellent alkali resistance.
HARDNESS: |
Cures to form hard
coating material. Seven days at 60° to 80°F (16° to 27°C) is required to
achieve maximum hardness.
WATER VAPOR PERMEABILITY: |
Cures to form a
solvent and vapor resistant film.
FLAMMABILITY: |
Non
flammable. | |
TOXICITY: |
Part B contains a
polyamide resin which is non-sensitizing; however, care should be taken to
thoroughly clean with soap and water any skin areas that are contacted by
E-5320. Undiluted vinegar is very effective in neutralizing coating that
contacts the skin. If the coating should get in the eye, flush with water
and call a physician.
Use a particulate matter respirator to avoid inhalation of paint particles when spraying.
ADHESION: |
Excellent adhesion to
most surfaces. Most coating materials have excellent adhesion to
E-5320. | |
| ||
COVERAGE: |
When used unreduced as
a block filler, the coverage is one gallon per 70 to 100 square feet (3.78
L / 7 to 10 m²). When reduced one pint of water per gallon (.5 L per 3.78
L) of mixed E-5320 and applied to smooth concrete, the coverage is one
gallon per 200 to 250 square feet (3.78 L / 20 to 25
m²). | |
SOLIDS: |
Weight Volume: |
60.5% 44.0% |
V.O.C.: |
111 grams per
liter. | |
FLASH POINT: |
Above 200°F (93°C)
T.O.C. | |
STORAGE STABILITY: |
One year. Protect from
freezing in shipment and storage.
THINNING: |
Thin with water. Clean
up with water supplemented with soap or a small quantity of vinegar.
T-5130 Thinner and Cleaner is recommended for both cleaning and drying
spray equipment in order to avoid corrosion.
| ||
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: |
Mix one volume of Part
A with one volume of Part B. Mix thoroughly. Power mixing recommended for
quantities over two gallons (7.6 L).
POT LIFE: |
The pot life is 1½
hours at 75°F (24°C). Pot life at 55°F (13°C) is doubled, but at 100°F
(38°C) it is reduced to 45 minutes.
PRIMER APPLICATION: |
Use long nap (1" to
1¼" (3 to 4 cm)) rollers when E-5320 is used as a block filler for porous
concrete. If blow holes form as the primer dries, make a second pass with
a relatively dry roller. Allow 5 to 10 minutes between
passes.
For application to smooth surfaces, add one pint of water per gallon of E-5320. Use a ½" or ¾" (1 cm to 2 cm) nap roller or nylon brush. Do NOT apply to surfaces which are below 50°F (10°C) or above 110°F (43°C) unless special instructions are secured from Gaco Western, Inc.
APPLICATION OF TOP COATS: |
Urethane and Hypalon®
coatings can be applied over E-5320 as soon as it is thoroughly set. This
degree of dryness is normally achieved in two to three hours. Neoprene
should not be applied directly to E-5320 until it has cured overnight.
Where maximum solvent resistance is needed, apply two coats a minimum of
two hours apart. Let cure for two days with a daily maximum temperature of
70°F (21°C). or higher. For 60°F (16°C) days, allow one week. All GacoFlex
elastomers and most commercial paint will adhere well to cured E-5320
films up to one month old, provided that the surface is clean and free of
chalk. |
