How do I know if I have enough insulation?

In the winter you might notice the walls and floors are cold, you have high heating costs, uneven heating levels or drafts within your home (for example, a room never seems to get warm).

In the summer you might notice uncomfortably hot inside air, high cooling costs, your air conditioning system working overtime and it's still not cool enough.

Ask yourself: Is mould or mildew forming on your walls? Is there excessive moisture buildup on windows? Are there moisture problems in your attic – damp insulation, mildew, rot? Does ice buildup at your eaves in the winter? Can you see bare patches of shingles on your roof after it snows?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the questions above, your home is showing symptoms of inadequate and/or improperly installed insulation or air sealing.

Cottages

Make your home away from home a more comfortable place to be by winterizing your cottage. Sprayed- in- place polyurethane foam is ideally suited to winterizing summer homes and cottages not only because of its high insulation values, but it also makes for a more comfortable building by preventing insects, odours and other airborne irritants from entering the home/cottage through air leakage paths.

Infrared Thermography

Using infrared thermal imaging technology, a GNI thermal energy audit can provide a valuable first step to increasing your home's energy efficiency. Our non-destructive infrared photography will identify any area(s) of deficient insulation, or air leakage, which once repaired will reduce your monthly energy bills.

For example:

	On a day with an outside ambient temperature of -23°C, heat passing through a pot light (when it wasn't on) into the attic led to a surface temperature in the attic insulation of 2.1°C.
	With the outside temperature down to -20°C; heat found passing through a ceiling joist into an attic insulated with batt insulation.
	Low/damaged insulation within attic at ceiling/wall junction identified. Outside Temp -15°C; areas at 11°C are at the dewpoint (the onset of mould growth).
